The “Baker Fire Eaters.”
We commenae [sic] the publication this week of the Muster Roll of the above named company. It is minute as regards the fate of its members, which makes it all the more interesting. This company left Baker county on the 27th of April 1861, to begin service in the Virginia army. Capt. Colquitt was at their head, but at Atlanta was promoted to a Colonelcy and by valient service, afterwards reached the distinction of brigadier general and his old company became part of his brigade. Wm. F. Plane was the second Captain of the company, and being killed at Sharpsburg, Capt. Ben J Russell, now of Baker county, was elected to fill the vacancy occasioned by his death. After the ravages of 32 pitched battles, of sickness, imprisonment and trials incident to those four dreadful years, and the flight of 20 years since, with its results there are left but few survivors of this brave band. Going over the roll we find the survivors are as follows: A. H. Colquitt Atlanta
Ga, United States senator, B. J. Russell of Baker county, practicing law, B. F.
Hudspeth, Clerk of the Court, Baker county, B. L. Hearn, traveling man for Cincinnatti Buggy Co., Cairo Ga., T. H.

McMurrain Family Among Turner County Pioneers
The beginning of Tom McMurrain family was back on April 30, 1855 when he was born the son of Thomas Hardy McMurrain and Rachel McKenzie McMurrain of Macon County.
The next year on December 14th, 1856, just a few miles away from the birthplace of Tom McMurrain, a little girl named Catherine Cynthia Merintha Hammond was born the daughter of Willis Hammond and Sarah Davies Hammond of Sumter County.
During the next 18 to 20 years of growing into manhood and womanhood their lives were spent much differently than those of us today. Both of their fathers served in the Civil War as officers.
T.H. McMurrain died while serving in the Army at Richmond, Virginia of typhoid fever. Willis Hammond was at home on furlough when General Lee surrendered.
One of the most interesting things about Tom McMurrain was the one dollar gold piece his father sent him on his 8th birthday. Little did he think that as time went by that he was going to meet Catherine Hammond and fall in love and use the dollar to pawn and buy a marriage license. They were married at the Willis Hammond home, near Old Sumter City, on August 1st, 1875. But as for the gold piece, it was redeemed and kept through his entire life.
Their first son, James, was born August 12th, 1877, but died two years later on October 29th 1879. Then their second son, Clark, was born April 19th, 1880, while they still lived in Macon County.
A short while later in 1882, they moved to Irwin County. Their first home in this location was a rented place on the old Peckville Lane Road north of Ashburn. They both worked hard in the fields, and most of the labor was done by their hands. On June 3rd, 1883, their third son, Mendon McMurrain, was born. When they bought their first property, land lot No. 92 for 40 cents an acre. On this land they build a log cabin, just a frame of mud and logs which they had cut and hewed themselves. They moved into this dwelling without having a chimney, floor or ceiling. Soon afterwards they decided to buy and build in
Sycamore. This house is where the first daughter, Lillian McMurrain was born on September 12, 1888. Then on October 11, 1891, their second daughter, Ola McMurrain, was born. They helped build and were charter members of the Sycamore Methodist Church which is still standing on the original site but is much improved.
Twice the family moved to Texas and invested in property. Being out there at two different times convinced them that Georgia soil was what they wanted in their shoes. So to Georgia, they came back to live out the remainder of their lives, where they invested in land lot No. 114 in Turner County, Georgia, better known as Breakfast Head. So on lot No. 93 located about 1½ miles east from Sycamore, they built on their original lot, a beautiful 6 room house, with a porch all around, where many enjoyed the wonderful times visiting grandparents and going to the old cookie jar always filled with tea cakes. In this
house they lived the rest of their lives and there Thomas Hardy McMurrain departed this world on October 15th, 1933. Catherine Cynthia Merintha Hammond McMurrain died on February 6th, 1941. Their bodies rest, as the lived, side by side in old Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Turner County
Clark McMurrain married Bill Bussey on February 12, 1900, and three of their four children still reside in Turner County.
Mendon Monroe McMurrain married Mandy Thelda Baker on July 19, 1903. They were the parents of eight children, who were born and grew up in Turner County.
Lillian F. Grand McMurrain married John Oscar Vance on July 27, 1902. They were the parents of six children and they also were born and grew up in Turner County, two of whom still make Turner County their home.
Ola Irene McMurrain married James Herschel Zorn on August 7, 1910, and are the parents of six children, one of them still residing in Turner County. Mrs. Zorn is one of the oldest living natives of Sycamore. She was born there on October 11, 1891 in the second home build by her parents in the late 1880s.
All of the above in-laws are deceased, but each of them was considered family members by the McMurrain family, and they, along with their mates, are buried in Turner County: The Clark McMurrain’s in Sycamore Cemetery; The Mendon McMurrain’s and Herschel Zorn in Rose Hill Cemetery, Ashburn; the Oscar Vance’s in Pleasant Hill Cemetery on
Sycamore-Irwinville Road.

OBIT
Thomas H. McMurrian
The subject of this sketch was born 78 years ago last April in Macon County, Georgia, and departed life Sunday, October 15, 1933. His parents were James F. and Rachel McKenzie McMurrian, the former served as an officer during the War Between the States, and lost his life then.
In 1875 he was married to Miss Catherine Hammond, of Sumter county, and to them were born eight children, four of whom died in infancy, the others are: Clark and M. M. McMurrian, Mrs J. O. Vand and Mrs. J. H. Zorn, all of Sycamore, twenty four grandchildren and ten great-grand children.
More than thirty years ago he and his family came to this county and identified themselves with the development of this section both religious and civic, where he became a very prosperous farmer and at his death was one of the largest land owners of Turner County.
He joined the Methodist church several years ago, and was a member of the Sycamore M. E. church at the time of his death. He was confined to bed thirteen weeks and endured much suffering thru which he leaned on the Friend that "sticketh closer than a brother." He asked his pastor, to pray that he might be restored to health; but if it was not the Lord's will, he was prepared to go. These are such comforting evidences to leave to his loved ones, and may the assurance rest with us all that we can go to him some day, through the merits of the atoning blood of our Redeemer.
"Yes, the golden chain is broken, but we hope 'tis not for aye; For tho on earth we can never mend the chain, yet this hope is given, That is God will it so, we can go to him, then let us trust and pray, That the parted links may be gathered home to for a golden chain in Heaven."
The funeral was held at this home on Monday afternoon and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. Fred Mayer and Rev. Charlie Tillman, in the presence of about five hundred relatives and friends. Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
The presence of many friends and the many beautiful flowers are evidences that a good man has gone; a loving husband, kind indulgent father, true neighbor and friend.
