Queries

Message: Obediah Snow and Rutha S. Rowland Rowan's son was named Joshua Bowden Snow, born July 2, 1849, died January 30, 1903. Bowden is a name that has often been given Snow descendants. Rutha was Obediah's 3rd wife. His 2nd wife was Sarah J., married in 1846, divorced Sept 18, 1848, same day that he and Rutha married in Saline County, AR. I am a descendant of Obediah Snow and Malana McMurray's son Solomon J. Snow and Nancy Elizabeth Rowan, daugther of Rutha S. Rowland and her first husband Thomas Rowan. Bennie Loftin; Rt 1 Box 270; Kiowa OK 74553-9727.

Linda, can you tell me more about Obediah Snow from Newton County,GA? Also more about Malana McMurray? They are my g-g-grandparents
I just found this past weekend where he is buried, the Snow Cemetery just outside of Bryant, AR. His grave is not marked but it is at the head of Solomon Snow's grave, his oldest son, and that one is marked. I understand Malana died prior to Obediah moving to AR, so the few distant cousins around here do not know much about her and this is the first I have heard about Obediah being a Captain. Tell me more, did he have siblings, who were his parents? You can e-mail me at mrunnells@email.com. Thanks

Hello cousins! Well, I have some information that may help you! You may know this much as it is. Obediah was married to Malana McMurray and to 2 or 3 other women. My line of family comes from Obediah, his son Solomon, and Solomon's Daughter Malana Jane Snow. They lived in Arkansas for many years. Obediah was married and divorced several times in Saline Co. (records held in Benton)Arkansas. It is my understanding that Obediah's dad's name was Solomon and that is why he named his son Solomon. Malana Jane Snow married Gillis McClendon on Dec 28 1873. Gillis and Malana had several children, one named Solomon! Gillis is my 4th generation grandfather. I can trace my family all the way up until the 1600's. Now I am looking for the Indian side of the family, but can't seem to link to it. I was told that the Snow's were Indian, but I have no proof. E-mail me when you get a chance! Let's get our family line correct and help each other! Maybe we could all have benefits one day for the rest of our lives!

Patrick,
Thank you for the hint about the Solomon name as it does appear to be a quite common name as well as Obediah during that time period. You are right Obediah was married 3 times, first to Malana or Malany McMurray in GA of which they had, I believe, 9 children, 7 boys and 2 girls. (This you probably known). My understanding, Malany died in GA and Obediah moved to AR with the children, to Saline County, AR. Here he marries a Sarah J.(Last name not known), in 12-1846, in Pulaski County,AR and on the date of the divorce final 9-18-1848,in Saline County, AR, he married his third wife, Ruth S Rowan (Maiden name Rowland), her first husband,Thomas Rowan, died in 1846. Ruth and Thomas had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. Ruth divorced Obediah in 1861 because of his drinking. Of this third marriage, my great grandfather was born, Joshuah B. Snow on 7-02-1849., who died on 1-30-1905.
Obediah is believed to have died sometime in 1861 in Saline County,AR.(Note: If you do not know this, all of the children are listed in Ancestry.com, except I believe Isom who died young, age 16, of pleurisy.
My lineage is from Joshuah, his daughter Clauda Leon,(one of a total of 7 children) who married a John Runnells, then their son Maurice (Sr.)(one of 6 children),all deceased, all buried in Little Rock, AR, where I presently live. Feel free to e-mail me at mrunnells@email.com.
NOTE;We have 2 more cousins here researching family history, but there may be more. Thanks.

Need any information available on the parents of Obediah Snow and Malana McMurray who married 1826 in Newton Co., Georgia. They had the following children, all born in Georgia: Edmond 8/23/1827, Solomon John 8/31/1828, Isham H. 7/17/1830, William Amos 6/30/1832, Louisa C. 11/7/1834, Silas L. 7/12/1837, Zachariah 7/21/1839, Malany (Malana) 10/30/1842. After Malana died Obediah moved to Saline Co., Arkansas with his children.

LANE, John Calvin
Can anybody help me sort out these people? Any help would be appreciated. I feel sure these LANEs connect, but haven't proved it or tied them to earlier generations.Rev. John Pinckney ALLEY (1840 AR - 1891 AR) md Malana SNOW (1843 GA - 1880 AR) in 1859 Saline Co., AR, a d/o Obadiah and Malana (McMURRAY) SNOW. Obadiah was supposedly 1/2 Cherokee. The ALLEYs had 8 children. 2 of their daughters md the same LANE man:
1. Georgia An Arnutious "Nettie" ALLEY (1869 AR - 1891 AR) md John Calvin LANE 1856 - 1922) of Saline Co., AR, in 1887 at Lonoke Co., AR. He was s/o Felix Donald LANE (1827-1881) and Leah PHILLIPS (1827-1867). His grandfather was supposedly John LANE (d. 1834 East TN). John Calvin LANE's sister was Mattie Leah LANE (d. 1925/26), who md Dudley EVERETT of Cabot, Lonoke Co., AR. (See EVERETT connection below.) Nettie and John LANE had 3 children: 1) Edward Flack LANE, 2) Calvin Alley LANE, and 3) Mattie Leah LANE--all d. in infancy.2. John LANE md 2nd his sister-in-law Julia Effie ALLEY (1871-1948) in 1895 and had 5 children: 1) John Calvin "Dick" LANE (1888-1911), 2) Claude Albert LANE (1897-1900), 3) Ruth Effie LANE (b. 1902); 4) Nona May LANE (1904-1925), and 5) Alva Augusta LANE (1906-1926). Rev. John Pinckney ALLEY [supra] in 1884 at Lonoke Co., AR, md 2nd Mrs. Malinda Catherine (EVERETT) LANE (1844-1931), a d/o J.A. EVERETT. I have not yet proved a connection to Dudley EVERETT supra. She was md 4 times: 1st a Mr. HUTERBERGER & had one dau name unk., 2nd Felix LANE (notice the name Felix LANE appears again--1st reference was to Felix Donald LANE) and had 2 sons: 1) Felix A. LANE (b. 1872, d. young) and 2) Andrew Hunter LANE (1877-1929) md Lula M. FARR (1878-1971) in 1896 3rd Rev. ALLEY and had 2 sons: 1) James Pinckney ALLEY (1885 AR - 1934 TN)--my husband's grandfather, and 2) Calvin William ALLEY (1888-1948). 4th Joseph H. JONES (1837-1912) in 1897 (no issue).James Pinckney ALLEY (half-bro of the sisters Nettie and Julia (ALLEY) LANE) md Nona Buchanan LANE (1887 AR - 1974 TN) in Pulaski Co., AR in 1908 and had 7 children. After J.P. ALLEY's death, she md Clarence Clement JACKSON (no issue). She was d/o Richard Wesley LANE (1852 AL - 1923 CA) and Elizabeth BUCHANAN (1856 OH - 1900). Family members think Nona likely was a first cousin of the John Calvin LANE, who md the ALLEY sisters. Nona said she was 1/8 Cherokee. Please Email: majiea@earthlink.net
