      James Thomas Harrison Jr., 90, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002.

      A native of Bethlehem, Mr. Harrison was a son of the late James Thomas ''Tom'' Harrison Sr. and Minnie Lee Tanner Harrison. He was retired as president of the Bank of Barrow and served as vice chairman of the bank's board for many years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce and the Winder Board of Education. He was a district supervisor for the Oconee River Soil and Water Conservation District and was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee and he was in the choir.

      Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of Winder.

      Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Jones; a daughter, Judith Harrison, Reston, Va.; a son, James William Harrison, Winder; two sisters, Mary Hamilton, Waycross, and Grace Daniel, Athens; a brother, M.C. Harrison, Sylvester; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

      The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home.

      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Winder or the American Cancer Society.

      James T. Harrison Jr.
      James Thomas Harrison Jr., 90, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at his home in Winder following three hospitalizations with pneumonia and cancer of the pancreas.

      A lifelong resident of Barrow County, Mr. Harrison was born August 4, 1911, in Bethlehem, the third of six children. His parents were James Thomas "Tom" Harrison Sr. and Minnie Lee Tanner Harrison.
      After graduating from Winder High School and the Draughon School of Commerce, Mr. Harrison was employed as bookkeeper at the National Furniture Company and became the general manager in 1943. When the Bank of Barrow was formed, Mr. Harrison was named to the Board of Directors in 1952, and in 1956 assumed the position of executive vice president, becoming president of the bank in 1963. He retired in 1975, but continued as vice chairman of the board for many years.
      In 1936, he married Kathryn Jones, Hamilton, who was to be his life partner for 66 years. Active members of the First Christian Church, they both sang in the choir for decades. Mr. Harrison served as an elder and trustee.

      In the community, Mr. Harrison was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Winder Barrow Chamber of Commerce and the Winder City Board of Education, holding various leadership positions through the years.

      A businessman who never left his ties to the earth, he owned and operated a 375-acre farm for many years, said family members. After retirement, his passion was gardening.

      Mr. Harrison was a district supervisor for the Oconee River Soil and Water Conservation District.
      His older siblings, Ernest Harrison, Bethlehem, and Betty Ruth Baggett, Lawrenceville, preceded him in death.

      Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at the First Christian Church of Winder.

      In addition to his wife, Mr. Harrison is survived by a son, James William Harrison, Winder; daughter, Judith Harrison, Reston, Va.; brother, M.C. Harrison, Sylvester; sisters, Mary Hamilton, Waycross, and Grace Daniel, Athens; five grandchildren, Michael Hughes, Morrisville, N.C., Clinton Hughes, Brooklyn, N.Y., Bill Harrison, Winder, Mark Harrison, Commerce, and Amy Harrison Saverance, Dacula; and four great-grandchildren.

      Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Winder or to the American Cancer Society.
      Smith Funeral Home, Winder, was in charge of arrangements.
