Ralph Burton was said to have had three families, the first was by Rachel whom he married in Florida. They had four children. Next he was suppose to have had a family somewhere in the New England states. Next he married Etta Meyers in Biloxi, Mississippi and had three children.
Burton was a seaman which may account for the three families. His grandson Leonard McMurrain tells me that Burton lived with them in his old age and when things didn't go to suit him he would pack his nap sack and take off, always taking a large ship's compass with him. Another story told to me by Leonard was, Burton would hide his whiskey in the stumps on their place. One time Leonard's father Cecil was burning stumps and the bottles hidden by Burton began to explode. Ira McMurrain tells of a time when Burton was in jail somewhere in Arkansas. When time come for the trial no one came for Burton. Being handcuffed to the cell bars, he simply tore the cell door off and appeared in court with the cell door on his back. Acting as his own attorney and was acquitted.
Ralph Burton is buried in Allen Cemetery, Harrison County, Mississippi. --Jessie Wood
