Thaddeus Stephen Ellis was the first child of James Madison and Rachel Harrison Ellis. He was born in 1840 in Murray County, Georgia. By 1842 his parents had moved to Gilmer County, Georgia where he was raised. There he met Rachel Jane Chastain, the daughter of Rev. Jonathan Davis Chastain and his wife, Rachel Stover. Rachel Jane was born July 26, 1844 and they were married at her mother's home on Cartecay Road September 18, 1859 by Thomas J. Stallings, Justice of the Peace.
Thaddeus Ellis first bought property on Big Creek Road in Gilmer County in 1862 from Seaborn Holt. Two years later in January 1864, Thaddeus Ellis along with his father and brother-in-law, Henry Cochran, enlisted Company D of the 10th Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers with the Union Army. During the War Between the States, Gilmer County was split and about half of the boys joined the northern army and half the south.
While serving with the Tennessee Volunteers in the spring, he was sent out on a raiding party with 20 or 30 more soldiers near Pulaski, Tennessee, while in an engagement with the enemy had his horse shot down under him and was badly hurt in his hip, back and in the face. He was furloughed home August 10, 1864 and became so sick he was never able to return to his command.
After the war Thaddeus remained sick with lung disease and never regained his health. He died March 18, 1879 and is buried at Macedonia Baptist Church on Big Creek Road, one of the churches his father, James M. Ellis, had helped organize. Rachel died July 11, 1882 and is buried by Thaddeus.
They left six children, four under the age of sixteen, James Kimsey Ellis, the oldest son was granted guardianship of the four minor children. On November 7, 1893, he applied for a pension for these children on his father's Civil War record and this was granted in 1896.
